When Wednesdays = No School

One of the quick adjustments to living in France is the much welcomed no school on Wednesday. Apparently this was institutionalized long ago and for us it bodes well in terms of spending more family quality time, one of the main reasons we’re here. There are ample programs to keep kids busy on this day for working parents, but without having to worry about that (for now), we’re tapping our free Wednesdays for local travel and discovery. On the agenda was one of our favorite old fishing towns, Cassis!

Cassis Beach and Cap Canaille (in far right – tallest cliff in France)

Pebbly beaches, Château de Cassis, imposing yet breathtaking cliffs and a colorful port are the main features of the coastal town. The marché or market happens to take place on Wednesday, which added an extra element to our visit.

It was too windy to hit the beach as originally planned and the sea was too active, so we forwent that ambition and decided to try elsewhere up the coast. Luna’s nap dictated how far we’d go which worked out fine, but she did unfortunately miss the serpentine and scenic Route des Crêtes where you will find Cap Canaille (the tallest cliff in France at 362 meters). The narrow road links Cassis to the next town over (La Ciotat). We made a couple of stops along the way to take in the views and were very happy with the way Renny (our new car), handled the bends.

It was then beach time at Saint Cyr sur Mer for the afternoon where we enjoyed a dip in the sea.

Happy place
I can see Île de Porquerolles from here!

Fun times and too cool for school, on Wednesdays!
